Hola, soy Mary Leonor Carreño, docente en educación superior y básica primaria y en este video compartiré mis reflexiones sobre los principios y estándares de accesibilidad en entornos virtuales de aprendizaje.

Principios fundamentales de accesibilidad

Desde mi experiencia, considero fundamentales los principios de perceptibilidad, operabilidad, comprensibilidad y robustez, como lo plantean las WCAG.

Me esfuerzo por asegurar que los contenidos puedan ser percibidos de múltiples formas (texto alternativo, subtítulos, colores contrastantes), que sean fácilmente navegables, y que la información sea clara y coherente para todos los estudiantes, independientemente de sus habilidades.

También aplico principios del Diseño Universal para el Aprendizaje (DUA), promoviendo múltiples formas de representación, acción y expresión, para atender a la diversidad de estilos de aprendizaje.

Pautas de Accesibilidad Web (WCAG 2.2)

El estándar que considero más relevante es el de las Pautas de Accesibilidad al Contenido en la Web (WCAG 2.2), porque ofrece criterios técnicos y medibles que orientan la creación de entornos digitales más inclusivos.

Su estructura basada en los principios POUR (Perceptible, Operable, Comprensible y Robusto) es muy útil para evaluar la accesibilidad de cualquier plataforma o recurso digital.

Desafíos en el contexto educativo

Uno de los principales desafíos que enfrento es la falta de formación docente en accesibilidad digital, así como la escasa incorporación de criterios de accesibilidad en el diseño de plataformas institucionales.

A veces, los recursos no están adaptados para personas con discapacidad visual o auditiva, y tampoco se consulta a los estudiantes sobre sus necesidades específicas.

Propuesta innovadora o buena práctica

Una buena práctica que se puede llegar a implementar es el uso de asistentes virtuales accesibles que integren lectura de pantalla, reconocimiento de voz y navegación por teclado.

Además, hacer uso de herramientas como capacitaciones breves en accesibilidad digital para docentes, que promuevan una cultura institucional inclusiva.

También propongo realizar diagnósticos participativos con estudiantes para identificar barreras y oportunidades de mejora desde sus propias experiencias.

La accesibilidad no debe ser un complemento, sino un eje central del derecho a una educación virtual equitativa.

Well, these were the dilemmas that occupied the minds of Turkish sultans.<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

In the&nbsp;Ottoman empire, killing your brothers was the only way to become a sultan.<pause type="custom" value="0.75"></pause>

Alright, sometimes locking them in the golden&nbsp;cage would do as well.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Let’s dive into the ruthless yet fascinating history of Turkey’s sultanate.<pause type="custom" value="1.75"></pause>

While politics in Medieval Europe was by no means easy, its succession laws were relatively simple.<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

In most cases, the oldest son inherited the crown—a system known as primogeniture.<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

But in the Ottoman Empire, things were a bit more&nbsp;dramatic.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Turkish succession was more like a game of last man standing.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

After the sultan's death, all his sons had an equal claim to the throne.<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

The princes gathered their supporters and tried to eliminate all the rivals and grab the throne for themselves.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Since Ottoman sultans usually had multiple sons,

it was often a full-blown butchery, bathing the country in fire and&nbsp;blood.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Brothers made temporary alliances&nbsp;or conspired against their own people with rival powers,&nbsp;

&nbsp;such as Persians or the Byzantines.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Anything goes in the pursuit of getting a crown,

or rather a stylish sultan’s turban.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Basically, the Ottomans invented the battle royale genre, long before video games did.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

No wonder, that this chaotic system, pushed the empire to the brink of collapse more than once.<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

Like at the beginning of the 15th century, when a&nbsp;civil war between sons of Bayezid the first, lasted for over a decade.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Then in 1444 came Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror,<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

named so after capturing Constantinople and defeating the&nbsp;Byzantine Empire.<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

He realized this all out&nbsp;sibling brawl was wrong and changes were needed.<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

But if you're hoping he introduced something more humane,

well, make sure you're sitting tight.<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

Because Mehmed’s solution was definitely not for the faint-hearted.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Enter the Law of Fratricide. <pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>A&nbsp;fancy name for killing a brother.<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

Under this law, the sultan had the right to execute his brothers,<pause type="custom" value="0.5"></pause> in order to prevent civil war between them.<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

Mehmed’s quote from the law made it crystal clear:<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

“Whichever of my sons inherits the sultanate, he shall kill his brothers for the common benefit of the people.”<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Brutal? <pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>Yes.&nbsp;<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>But in a twisted way, effective.<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

To be fair, royal fratricide wasn't a completely new concept.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Founder of Rome, Romulus, killed his brother&nbsp;Remus,<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

&nbsp;even though they went through thick and thin together.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Roman Emperor Caracalla<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause> murdered his brother Geta, in front of their mother.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

And perhaps you remember from our episode about ancient Persia, that king&nbsp;Darius had his brother assassinated as well.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

What was new this time around, was the fact that the Ottomans institutionalized the practice of killing rivalling brothers,<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

and made it literally required according to succession laws.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

There was only one&nbsp;restriction, the&nbsp;royal blood should not be spilled.

And the killings were supposed to be done by strangulation.&nbsp;<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

Perhaps they just didn’t want blood stains on famous Turkish carpets!<pause type="long" value="2"></pause>

Let’s explore some real horror stories resulting from the Law of Fratricide.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Starting with Selim the first,<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

who ordered the killing of at least seven half-brothers, plus their sons, after ascending the throne in 1512.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

He also executed multiple grand viziers, the highest officials in the Ottoman Empire, who served under him.<pause type="custom" value="1"></pause>

As a result, a popular Turkish proverb was coined: May you be a vizier of Selim’s!<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

It's the kind of curse you'd save for the Istanbul taxi driver,

&nbsp;who charged you double for the ride to the airport.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

No wonder then, that this ruler,&nbsp;has been accurately nicknamed&nbsp;Selim the Grim.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Another sultan, <pronounce value="Moorahd">Murad</pronounce> the third,&nbsp;began his rule in 1574 by killing his five younger brothers.<pause type="custom" value="0.75"></pause>

Imagine growing up playing with your siblings, slowly realizing that one day you will have to kill’em all.<pause type="short" value="0.5"></pause>

That must really mess up your brain.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Perhaps to make up for it, <pronounce value="Moorahd">Murad</pronounce>&nbsp;got big time into reproduction,

fathering at least 59 children.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

However, his surviving sons outlived him for just a couple of days.<pause type="custom" value="0.5"></pause>

Because the next sultan, Mehmed III, went all out on the fratricide law.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

&nbsp;He&nbsp;executed&nbsp;his all 19 brothers in one night.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

The Istanbul undertaker must have been very busy the next day morning.<pause type="custom" value="1.75"></pause>

The Law of Fratricide was undoubtedly very cruel, even for the brutal reality of those times.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

But the Ottoman rulers believed it was a lesser evil&nbsp;in service of a greater good: stability.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Nevertheless, this practice was eventually stopped by&nbsp;Sultan Ahmed the first, in 1603.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

What were the reasons behind the change?<pause type="custom" value="0.75"></pause>

Well, Ahmed was only 13 years old when he got to power.

Perhaps he simply needed a brother who was alive, to play with?<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>

Or more importantly, he had just one sibling—Mustafa, who apart from Ahmed, was the only living member of the Ottoman dynasty.<pause type="medium" value="1.25"></pause>
